How Policywings Compares Insurance From 30+ Companies — Our Process Explained

When you contact an insurer directly — HDFC ERGO, Star Health, Axis Max Life, whoever — you get their plans. That's it. The advisor who speaks to you works for that insurer and is incentivised to sell that insurer's products.
When you contact a licensed insurance broker, you get something different: access to plans from multiple insurers, independent comparison, and an advisor whose obligation is to you — not to any single insurer's sales targets.
This is an honest explanation of how Policywings does insurance comparison, what we look at, and what makes a brokered recommendation different from a direct purchase.
Who Policywings Is
Policywings Insurance Broking Pvt. Ltd. is registered with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) as a composite insurance broker.
IRDAI License Number: DB 835 License Valid Until: 12 August 2028 Registered Address: A-57, 5th Floor, Sector-136, Noida 201301 Phone: +91-98111-67809
As an IRDAI-licensed broker, Policywings is authorised to advise on and arrange insurance across all categories — life, health, motor, travel, commercial, and liability — from multiple IRDAI-registered insurance companies.
Broker vs Agent — The Structural Difference
Most people buying insurance in India deal with agents, not brokers. The distinction is fundamental:
Insurance Agent: Represents one insurance company. Has a licensing contract with that specific insurer. Can only sell that insurer's products. Earns commission from that insurer. Their regulatory obligation is to the insurer.
Insurance Broker: Represents the client — the policyholder. Is licensed to work with multiple insurers simultaneously. Has a fiduciary duty to act in the policyholder's best interest. Can compare across the market and recommend the most suitable product for the client's need.
Per IRDAI's Insurance Brokers Regulations: a licensed broker must maintain independence from any single insurer, must not receive volume-based incentives that compromise independent advice, and must disclose commission arrangements to clients.
When Policywings recommends HDFC ERGO over Star Health for a specific Noida buyer, it is because the data and that buyer's profile support it — not because HDFC ERGO offers a higher commission for that month's sales target.
The 30+ Insurers We Can Access
As a composite broker, Policywings is authorised to compare and arrange policies from all IRDAI-registered insurance companies. The current active comparison set includes:

The specific availability changes as insurers join or exit the market, or as regulatory changes affect product lines.
How We Actually Compare: The Process
Step 1 — Understanding Your Specific Need
Insurance comparison starts with your situation, not with a product. The right questions before recommending anything:
- What's your age and health status (any existing conditions)?
- What family members need to be covered?
- What hospitals do you use or would you use in Noida?
- What is your sum insured goal?
- Do you have employer coverage, and when does it end?
- What's your budget range for annual premium?
- Do you have specific coverage needs (maternity, OPD, senior parents, home loan protection)?
The answers to these questions eliminate most of the 30+ insurers from the shortlist before the first plan is shown.
Step 2 — Filtering by Verified Claims Data
Every insurer we recommend must pass basic claims reliability criteria. We use the same data sources referenced throughout this blog series:
For health insurers:
- 3-year average CSR from Ditto Insurance's NL-37 analysis (the most methodologically consistent independent source)
- Complaint volume per 10,000 claims from IRDAI NL-45 public disclosures
- ICR from IRDAI Annual Report NL-4/NL-5 data
Our CSR threshold for health insurance: We do not actively recommend health insurers with 3-year average CSR below 89–90% for primary health policies. Star Health (84.97% 3-year avg) and ICICI Lombard (84.50% 3-year avg) are not our primary health recommendations for most standard buyer profiles — though we explain their specific situations where they make sense (Star Red Carpet for seniors needing fast PED coverage; ICICI Lombard Elevate for surrogate cover needs).
For life/term insurers:
- CSR above 98.5% for 3-year average is our working threshold
- Amount Settlement Ratio (ASR) to ensure large-value claims aren't systematically under-settled
- Complaint volume — we note Tata AIA's post-sales service concerns (per Ditto and Gyansurance independent analyses)
Step 3 — Matching Plan Features to Your Profile
After filtering on claims quality, we compare plan features against your specific needs:
For a family with diabetes: Care Supreme's Instant Cover (Day 31 PED coverage) or Aditya Birla Activ One MAX's Chronic Care (Day 1) are primary considerations. HDFC ERGO Optima Secure has no equivalent PED acceleration — excellent insurer, but less suited for this profile's immediate coverage need.
For a young professional under 30 in good health: HDFC ERGO Optima Secure+ offers the strongest claims quality (96.71% CSR) at a manageable premium with 2X Day-1 cover.
For a 65-year-old parent with multiple PEDs: Star Health Red Carpet (12-month PED wait, 30% co-pay) vs Niva Bupa Senior First Platinum (24-month PED wait, optional co-pay) — the choice depends on expected claim timing and financial capacity for co-payment.
For a Noida startup founder needing term insurance: Axis Max Life STPP with CI rider and Waiver of Premium, at 99.62% 3-year CSR and Cover Continuance during business difficulty.
Step 4 — Getting Actual Premium Quotes
We obtain current zone-specific premium quotes (Noida falls in Zone A for most insurers) from insurers' official portals. Premiums are age-specific, zone-specific, and SI-specific — generic premium ranges in blogs are starting points, not your actual quote.
We present quotes from at least 2–3 suitable options for most profiles. The buyer sees:
- Plan name and insurer
- Sum insured
- Annual premium
- Key features and limitations
- Claims data for the insurer
- Our recommendation and reasoning
Step 5 — Policy Issuance and Documentation
Once a plan is selected, we handle the documentation process: proposal form completion, medical examination coordination (for plans requiring it), policy document review, and nominee registration. We verify that the issued policy matches what was agreed at the quote stage.
What We Get Paid and Why It's Disclosed
Policywings earns commission from the insurer when a policy is placed. IRDAI regulations define maximum commission rates by policy category. Policywings complies with all IRDAI broker regulations regarding commission disclosure.
Does commission bias our recommendations? This is the honest question. Commission rates vary between insurers but are broadly similar across competitors in the same product category. The larger differentiator in our compensation is retention — clients who have a good experience and renew every year, add policies, and refer others are worth significantly more than clients who churn after one year. Our incentive structure, in practice, aligns with giving you good initial advice — because a client who gets a good recommendation trusts us for the long term.
The Reason to Use a Broker for Your Insurance
Every piece of research-driven, data-cited content in this 160-blog series exists to help Noida families understand their insurance choices better. But reading research and applying it to your specific situation are different tasks.
Your actual situation involves your exact age, your specific health conditions, your home loan balance, your parents' health status, the hospitals nearest to you, and dozens of other variables that a standardised blog cannot capture.
That's what a face-to-face conversation with a licensed broker does — it takes the research and applies it to you specifically, with current quotes from the actual insurers, and a recommendation backed by accountability.
