What does a savings duration calculator show?
If you already know how much you can save each month, the natural question is how long it will take to reach your goal. This calculator answers it, counting the growth your savings earn along the way and any money you have already set aside.
It is the mirror image of a savings goal calculator, which starts from a date and tells you how much to save.
How is the time calculated?
The calculator adds your monthly saving to the balance at the start of each month, applies one month of growth at your expected return, and repeats until the balance reaches your goal. If you save yearly, the whole year's saving goes in at the start of each year and grows month by month in between.
New balance = (balance + monthly saving) × (1 + yearly return ÷ 12)
For example, saving ₹15,000 a month from scratch at an expected 8% a year reaches ₹10 lakh in 4 years 8 months. Putting the same ₹1,80,000 in once at the start of each year gets there in 4 years 1 month, because each year's money starts growing sooner.
How saving more shortens the wait
Here is how long it takes to build ₹10 lakh at an expected 8% a year, starting from nothing:
| Monthly saving | Time to reach ₹10 lakh |
|---|---|
| ₹10,000 | 6 years 5 months |
| ₹15,000 | 4 years 8 months |
| ₹20,000 | 3 years 8 months |
| ₹25,000 | 3 years |
Doubling your monthly saving does not quite halve the time, because the money saved in the early months has longer to grow. Even so, every extra rupee saved brings the goal closer.
Three ways to reach your goal sooner
| Lever | What it means | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Save more | Raise your monthly saving, even slightly | The biggest and most reliable effect |
| Start with a lump sum | Put a bonus or other windfall in at the start | Gives growth a head start |
| Earn a better return | Choose investments that suit a longer time frame | Helps most over many years, with more ups and downs |
Raising your saving every year as your income grows, a step-up, is one of the easiest ways to shorten the timeline without feeling the pinch.
Staying on track
- Automate the transfer on salary day so the saving happens first.
- Keep the goal money separate from your everyday account.
- Review your progress once or twice a year and recalculate if things change.
- Keep an emergency fund, so a surprise expense does not force you to dip into the goal money.
Protecting your plan
A long savings plan can be knocked off course by a hospital bill or a loss of income. Health insurance protects your savings from medical costs, and term life cover makes sure your family can still reach the goal if you cannot.
Frequently asked questions
1.How long will it take to save ₹10 lakh?
It depends on how much you save and the return you earn. At an expected 8% a year, saving ₹15,000 a month takes 4 years 8 months and saving ₹25,000 a month takes 3 years.
2.Why does the calculator say my goal is not reachable?
This happens when there is no regular saving and no return, so the balance never grows, or when the goal is more than 100 years away. Add a monthly or yearly saving, or plan for a return above zero.
3.Can I save yearly instead of monthly?
Yes. Choose Yearly and enter the amount you put away once a year, such as a bonus. The calculator adds it at the start of each year, so it reaches the goal a little sooner than the same total spread across twelve months.
4.Does the calculator include inflation?
No. It works in today's rupees. For a goal several years away, raise the goal amount to allow for rising prices, for example by about 6% a year.
5.What return should I use?
Use a return that matches where you keep the money: around 5% to 7% for deposits and about 10% to 12% for long-term equity funds. A lower assumption gives a safer estimate.
6.How is this different from the savings goal calculator?
The savings goal calculator starts from a target date and tells you how much to save each month. This calculator starts from your monthly saving and tells you how long it will take.
