What is GST?

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is the tax charged on most goods and services sold in India. It replaced many older taxes, such as excise duty, VAT and service tax, with a single system that applies across the country.

GST is charged at each stage of sale, but businesses can claim credit for the GST they paid on their purchases, so the final burden falls on the consumer.

How to add GST to a price

Adding GST

GST = price × rate ÷ 100, and total = price + GST

For example, a service priced at ₹10,000 before tax, charged at 18%, carries ₹1,800 of GST, so the customer pays ₹11,800.

How to remove GST from a price

Prices on shelves and menus usually include GST. To find the price before tax, do not simply take 18% off the total: that gives the wrong answer. Divide instead.

Removing GST

Price before GST = total × 100 ÷ (100 + rate)

For example, an item sold for ₹11,800 including 18% GST has a price before tax of ₹11,800 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹10,000, and ₹1,800 of GST.

GST rate slabs

From 22 September 2025, GST moved to two main rates, 5% and 18%, with a higher 40% rate for luxury and sin goods. The older 12% and 28% slabs were largely folded into these.

RateBroadly applies to
0%Many fresh foods and basic essentials
5%Many everyday goods and some services
18%The standard rate for most goods and services
40%Luxury and sin goods
3%Gold, silver and jewellery
0.25%Rough precious and semi-precious stones

Rates depend on the exact item or service and can change after GST Council meetings. Check the current rate for your item before you rely on the result.

CGST, SGST and IGST explained

  • Within the same state, GST is split equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). On ₹1,800 of GST, that is ₹900 each.
  • In a union territory without its own legislature, UTGST takes the place of SGST.
  • When goods or services move between states, the whole amount is charged as Integrated GST (IGST).

The total tax is the same either way; only the way it is shared between the centre and the states changes.

GST on insurance premiums

Since 22 September 2025, premiums for individual life insurance and individual health insurance, including family floater plans, are exempt from GST. Before that they carried 18% GST, so the change made cover noticeably cheaper.

Other policies, such as motor insurance and group policies bought by employers, still attract GST. Your premium receipt shows the tax charged, if any.

GST for businesses: input tax credit

Registered businesses collect GST on their sales and pay GST on their purchases. They can usually subtract the GST paid on business purchases, called input tax credit, from the GST they owe, and pay only the difference to the government.

Use the Remove GST option to split a supplier's GST-inclusive bill into its price and tax when recording purchases.

Frequently asked questions

1.How do I calculate 18% GST on an amount?

Multiply the amount by 18 and divide by 100 to get the GST, then add it to the amount. For ₹5,000, the GST is ₹900 and the total is ₹5,900.

2.How do I remove GST from a total amount?

Divide the total by (100 + rate) and multiply by 100 to get the price before GST. For ₹5,900 including 18% GST, that is ₹5,900 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹5,000.

3.What are the current GST rates?

Since 22 September 2025, the main rates are 5% and 18%, with 40% for luxury and sin goods, 3% for gold and jewellery, and some essentials at 0%. The exact rate depends on the item, so check it for what you are buying or selling.

4.What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

For sales within a state, GST is split equally between the centre (CGST) and the state (SGST). For sales between states, the whole tax is charged as IGST. The total amount of tax is the same.

5.Is GST charged on health and life insurance?

Premiums for individual health and life insurance policies are exempt from GST from 22 September 2025. Motor insurance and group policies still carry GST.

6.Why can't I just subtract 18% to remove GST?

Because GST is added on the price before tax, not on the total. Taking 18% off ₹11,800 gives ₹9,676, not the correct ₹10,000. Dividing by 1.18 gives the right answer.
