Niva Bupa Health Insurance Review 2025–26 — Plans, Claims, and What to Watch For

Niva Bupa Health Insurance (formerly Max Bupa) is a standalone health insurer with a flagship product — ReAssure 2.0 — that contains features no other major plan in India currently matches. That makes it worth evaluating carefully, because there are also things that need equal scrutiny.
Company Background
Niva Bupa was established in 2008 as Max Bupa Health Insurance, a joint venture between Max India and Bupa UK. It rebranded to Niva Bupa in 2021. It operates exclusively in health insurance — no motor, fire, or general insurance.
FY 2025 figures from Niva Bupa's official press release (March 2025):
- 20 million+ lives covered
- 10,421 cashless network hospitals
- 8,900+ employees
- Gross Written Premium FY25 (adjusted): ₹6,762 crore — 32% year-on-year growth
- Solvency Ratio: 2.6 (vs IRDAI regulatory minimum of 1.5)
The solvency ratio of 2.6 is significantly above the regulatory floor of 1.5, indicating Niva Bupa maintains substantial assets relative to its projected claim liabilities — a sign of financial stability. This is confirmed independently by Paybima's financial analysis citing IRDAI data (December 2025).
Claim Settlement Performance
Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR)
Per Niva Bupa's own FY 2024–25 public disclosure (published March 2025):
- CSR FY 2024–25: 92.4%
This matches Ditto Insurance's independent analysis (June 2026), which applies a consistent methodology across all insurers using NL-37 quarterly IRDAI filings:
- CSR FY 2024–25: 92.39%
- 3-year average CSR (FY 2022–25): 91.62%
- Industry average: 91.22%
Niva Bupa's 3-year average (91.62%) is just above the industry average. For context, HDFC ERGO's 3-year average is 96.71% — significantly stronger. Niva Bupa's CSR is adequate and improving, but not standout.
Incurred Claim Ratio (ICR)
Per IRDAI Annual Report FY 2024–25 (as cited in the standalone health insurer comparison at smcinsurance.com): Niva Bupa ICR FY 2024–25: 61.22% — the lowest among the five major standalone health insurers.
The 3-year average ICR of approximately 58.10% is confirmed by Ditto's ICR analysis for Niva Bupa (June 2026).
An ICR of 58–61% means Niva Bupa pays out approximately ₹58–61 for every ₹100 collected in premium. Ditto notes this "does not suggest aggressive claim rejection" given the CSR above 91%, but emphasises it should be read alongside the CSR and complaint data for a full picture.
Cashless Pre-Authorization Speed
Niva Bupa processes pre-authorization within 30 minutes for active policies, subject to complete documentation, per the official Niva Bupa website.
Complaint Volumes — The Key Concern
Ditto's Niva Bupa review (July 2026) cites approximately 42.85 complaints per 10,000 claims — "among the higher ones in the standalone health insurance space." This is also flagged independently by PolicyJack.com (March 2026). High complaint volumes mean claims are ultimately settled (CSR above 91%) but the process may involve more friction, documentation demands, and escalation than peers with lower complaint rates.
The ReAssure 2.0 Plan — The Feature That Makes It Stand Out
ReAssure Forever — Unlimited Same-Illness Restoration
This is the plan's defining feature, and the one no competitor currently matches. Per Ditto's ReAssure 2.0 review (May 2026):
"ReAssure 2.0 restores the base sum insured unlimited number of times. It is applicable for any illness, for any insured member."
PolicyJack.com's independent analysis (March 2026) confirms: "ReAssure 2.0 offers unlimited restore for same illness — the only major plan with this clause."
Why this matters in practice: A cancer patient having multiple chemotherapy-related hospitalisations in one year, or a diabetic with recurrent admissions, can exhaust a plan's sum insured more than once. ReAssure 2.0's same-illness unlimited restoration specifically addresses this — no other mainstream plan does.
Booster+ — Coverage That Grows to 10X
Unused sum insured carries forward, accumulating up to 10 times the base SI for future years. Ditto's comparison of Niva Bupa vs Star Health (May 2026) notes: "For a young buyer who starts with a ₹15 lakh policy and makes no claims, Niva Bupa's 10x bonus structure can grow that cover far more substantially" than Star Health's maximum 2x.
Lock the Clock — Premium Fixed at Entry Age
The Lock the Clock add-on fixes premium at the age of entry until the first claim — only medical inflation adjustments apply. Confirmed by Ditto's ReAssure 2.0 review (May 2026). For a 28-year-old buyer, this means premiums don't increase as they turn 35 or 40 — a meaningful long-term cost advantage.
No Room Rent Restriction (Platinum Variants)
The ReAssure 2.0 Platinum and Platinum+ variants have no room rent cap. This is confirmed by PolicyJack.com (March 2026). Lower variants may carry room restrictions — check the specific variant before purchasing.
Post-Hospitalisation Coverage — 180 Days
Niva Bupa covers post-hospitalisation expenses for 180 days, vs the standard 90 days offered by most plans including Star Health — noted in Fincover.com's comparison (2025, citing plan documents). For serious conditions with extended recovery, this extra 90 days can cover significant follow-up costs.
What ReAssure 2.0 Doesn't Include
- No OPD coverage in the base plan (Safeguard+ consumables is a recommended add-on, not standard)
- 10% co-payment for members enrolled at age 61+
ReAssure 3.0 — Worth Waiting On
Niva Bupa launched ReAssure 3.0 with an unlimited sum insured Black variant and no room rent cap. However, Ditto's ReAssure 3.0 review (May 2026) advises caution: "Since the plan is new and lacks sufficient claims experience, it may be wise to wait and watch if you prefer proven performance over newer product features."
ReAssure 2.0 has years of claims track record. ReAssure 3.0 does not yet. For buyers who value proven performance, ReAssure 2.0 is the safer recommendation for now.
Hospital Network
10,421 cashless hospitals as of March 2025 — from Niva Bupa's official press release. This is notably smaller than Star Health (16,000+) and HDFC ERGO (16,000+). For Noida and Greater Noida, the major hospitals are covered, but buyers with family in smaller UP towns should verify coverage at nivabupa.com.
Who Should Buy Niva Bupa ReAssure 2.0
- People with chronic conditions (diabetes, hypertension, cardiac history) who face realistic risk of multiple hospitalisations in the same year — same-illness unlimited restoration is uniquely valuable here
- Buyers who want premium locked at a young age (Lock the Clock add-on)
- Young buyers who want maximum long-term coverage accumulation (Booster+ grows to 10x base SI)
- Buyers who prioritise CSR over price and can absorb Platinum+ pricing
Who Should Look Elsewhere
- Budget-constrained buyers. ReAssure 2.0 Platinum+ is among the more expensive plans. Star Health Family Health Optima or Care Supreme are cheaper
- Buyers who want the best CSR available. HDFC ERGO's 96.71% is substantially stronger
- Buyers who want smooth, low-maintenance claim experience without broker support — the complaint volumes are a real signal
- Buyers in areas with limited Niva Bupa network — 10,421 hospitals vs 16,000+ for Star Health and HDFC ERGO
